Training is a legal requirement. The provision and use of work equipment regulations 1988 (PUWER) require employers to provide adequate training and to ensure that tractors are driven only by employees who have received appropriate training in their safe use, including with attachments and trailers. If you are self employed, the regulations still apply.
1. Tractor driving: LANTRA integrated training and assessment
Course objectives
- Carry out risk assessment of the tasks in hand
- Enter and leave the cab safely
- Understand the purpose and meaning of the instrumentation
- Understand the function of all controls
- Understand the hazards associated with some controls
- Start & stop the engine in a safe manner
- Be competent in driving a tractor in a forward and reverse direction
- Leave the tractor in a safe state
- Understand the reasons for daily checks
- Competently perform checking of the lubrication, cooling, and air intake of the engine, perform basic lubrication of the tractor and ensure the tractor is in a safe road going state.
The following optional points can be covered and tested on the course:-
- Attach a mounted implement and manoeuvre in a forward and reverse directions with a mounted implement
- Attach a trailed implement and manoeuvre in a forward and reverse direction with a trailed implement
- Leave unattached implements in a safe state
- Correctly attach a PTO shaft between tractor and implement
- Attach the PTO shaft guards correctly
- Assess the minimum turning circle for the machine and the angle of the PTO shaft
- Carry out basic operations using tractor mounted loader.
NB either trailed or mounted implements must be included as part of the basic course
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Tractor Driving Courses:
- Close fitting overalls,
- Steel toe capped shoes/boots,
- Light industrial gloves.
Course duration: Between 1 and 5 days, depending on trainee’s experience
Maximum number of trainees per course: Four
Note- Optional NPTC assessment & certification (M01 & MO1a) may be taken if so desired

2. Tractor Driving on Slopes - LANTRA Integrated Training and Assessment
It is recommended that operators wishing to take this course have experience of tractor driving
Course Content: Personal safety:
- Personal protective equipment
- Mounting and dismounting
- Machine knowledge
- Use of manufacturer's handbook
- Safe stop procedure
Observation:
- All-round checks
- Direction of travel
General safety:
- Pre-start checks
- Controls and instrumentation
- Use of handbrake
- Move-off procedure
- Use of gears and speed
- Manoeuvring.
Slope assessment:
- Grip test
- Evaluation of angle of slope
- Evaluation of machine in use
- Safety.
Travelling:
- Manoeuvring with trailed implements
Manoeuvring with mounted implements
- General:
- Safety
- Security of loads
- Legislation
Duration of course: Between 1 and 2 days depending upon trainee’s experience
Maximum number of trainees per course: Six
