BRUSHCUTTERS & STRIMMERS
Maintenance and Operation:
The course is designed to enable trainees to understand and comply with safety and legal requirements in the use of brushcutters/strimmers, with an emphasis on safe practices, warning signs and guards.
Course Objectives
- State and identify the correct protective clothing to be worn and the standards required
- Perform routine maintenance in accordance with the manufacturer's handbook
- Identify faults and defects on a brushcutter/strimmer and decide which the operator can easily remedy, and which should be referred to a specialist engineer
- Identify which cutting head to select for the relevant operating conditions
- Carry out fuel mixing correctly and be able to start the brushcutter/strimmer from both a hot and a cold condition in a safe manner
- Operate the brushcutter/strimmer in a safe manner having regard for the safety of the operator, the public, property and environmental factors
- Plan systematic working operations
The use of the manufacturer's instruction book is stressed at all times to ensure maintenance and adjustments are carried out to manufacturer’s recommendations.
Course Duration: One or two days depending upon operator’s experience

- Fuelling and starting
- Testing the Brushcutter/Strimmer
- Checking the Brushcutter/Strimmer
- Safe operation in a variety of operating conditions
- Round up and conclusions
- Assessments for certification
Equipment required by trainees who undertake the Brushcutter/Strimmer course:
For the maintenance session:
- Brushcutter complete and in good condition with cutting head adaptor bolts.
- Manufacturer's instruction book.
- Manufacturer's tool kit.
- 2 Stroke fuel mixed to manufacturer's recommendations in an approved container.
- Clean filter funnel.
- Eye protection goggles (to EN 166).
- Cleaning cloths.
For the operating session:
- Brushcutter complete and in good condition with cutting head adaptor bolts
- Eye and full face protective goggles and visor
- Ear defenders
- Gloves adequate to protect hands against flying debris
- Working trousers adequate to protect legs against flying debris
- Safety boots with steel toe caps
NB. The wearing of adequate personal protective equipment is insisted upon by the Health and Safety Executive and must be worn on this course.
Assessments: Although the aforementioned course is of LANTRA Integrated Training & Assessment, if so desired, trainees may opt for National Proficiency Test Council (NPTC) assessment instead
